What to do when someone has died

When someone dies, there are procedures you need to undertake. The path to take varies on the circumstances of the death, which are outlined below.

Sudden death at home

If your loved one has died at home and the death is sudden, then you need to ring for the ambulance and the police.

Non-sudden death at home

If your loved one has died at home and the death is not sudden, then you need to ring the deceased’s doctor or palliative care co-ordinator. If they are not contactable, then ring for the ambulance and the police. It is after such a process that the funeral director can be contacted

Death in hospital, aged care facility, hospice or any institution

If your loved one has died in a hospital, aged care facility, hospice or any other institution, then the staff at the above facilities will take the responsibility to carry out the correct procedures, before the funeral homes is contacted.

Other

If your loved one has died at a location other than at home, hospital, aged care facility, hospice or any other institution and the death is either sudden or not sudden, then you need to ring for the ambulance and the police. The police will carry out the correct procedures.
